2022 Recommendations

Good Morning

Out to Pasture/Misery (singles)

In March of 2022 Good Morning released a two pack of singles, both somber folk infused songs laden with violins and melancholy themes. Keeping with the theming continuity of their 2021 album release Barnyard, the band comes to terms with getting older and still finding one’s way.

Drugdealer

Hiding in Plain Sight

Chock full of 70’s soft rock flavor, with a hint of jazz, Hiding in Plain Sight is the follow up to Drugdealer’s 2019 album Raw Honey. This album feels as it could serve as the backdrop to a Dazed and Confused sequel while simultaneously feeling contemporary enough for a modern audience.

Track to check out: Madison

When/where to play this album:
Enjoying a nice afternoon, not too warm, not too cold, chewing on something of the fungal variety.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Omnium Gatherum

A return to form with a twist, King gizzard delivers on their thousandth album. The introductory track sets the stage for the album, sitting at a whopping 18 minute introduction to the operatic sensation that is Omnium Gatherum

Track to check out:  The Dripping Tap

When/where to play this album:
Over explaining the gizzverse timeline

Jerry Paper
Free Time

Jerry Paper is one of those rare figures in indie rock who seems to never grow up. They look like they are having a great time, whether creating a wacky, indubitably creative music video or maintaining an energetic stage presence. I was fortunate enough to see Jerry Paper a few months before the release of Free Time and after hearing a few choice singles live, I was immediately excited. A satisfying follow up to 2020’s Abracadabra, one of my favorite indie albums of that year.

Track to check out: Gracie III

When/where to play this album:
During a heated water balloon battle in the middle of summer

Black Midi
Hellfire

Chaotic yet cohesive, manic yet poignant, Hellfire feels like a shot into the void that hits its target every. single. time.  This is my personal favorite release yet from the London batch of gents known as Black Midi. There is simply no other band like them, boundaries do not exist to them. Every time I listen to this album I learn something new.

Track to check out: Sugar/Tzu

When/where to play this album:
Long walk into the mouth of oblivion.

JPEGMAFIA
Hazard Duty Pay! (single)

Released on youtube in 2021, the sample for JPEGMAFIA’s stellar single Hazard Duty Pay was cleared in 2022, so that is why it makes this list. Textbook chopped up sampling combined with visceral vocal delivery makes this track one of his strongest.

  sometimes we feel pain DIRTY!

When/where to play this album:
Directly under the biggest disco ball you can find.

Donny Benet
Le Piano (EP)

Donny Benet feels straight out of 80s dance culture. He’s always wearing a suit on stage and delivering funky tracks with some of the most dance inducing bass grooves I’ve heard as of late.
